Kambara-shuku AreaWhy are there so many old houses left?

Facing the Tokaido, Kambara is located near the mouth of the Fuji River. Since the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Kambara has had a prosperous industrial history, especially in the salt manufacturing industry. In the Edo period (1603-1868), it became a post station with nearly 50 inns.
The village was once destroyed by the tsunami of the Genroku era, but was quickly rebuilt, and in the Meiji and Taisho eras, many of the houses were rebuilt, retaining their Edo-period structures.
